Army Spc. Julie R. Hickey
Born January 17, 1984 Died July 4, 2004
Julie was a soldier from Galloway, OHIO,
and she worked
with women and children in Afghanistan.
Army Spc. Julie R. Hickey, 20, died in Landstuhl, Germany,
of complications from diabetes
four days after she was evacuated from Bagram, Afghanistan.
Julie joined the reserves after graduating
from Westland High School in 2002.
She left for Afghanistan in November, 2003.
Julie's unit, the 412th Civil Affairs Battalion,
specializes in humanitarian assistance and working with displaced civilians.
She worked at a medical clinic assisting children.
She taught them personal hygiene,and also taught them a little English:
counting from one to 10
AND sayng
'Groovy, man!'
Julie's family has a history of diabetes
but her case had not been diagnosed
prior to going to Afghanistan.
Julie was transferred to Landstuhl on June 30.
She went into insulin shock and died the day
before she was to be sent to Walter Reed Army Medical Center
near Washington D.C.
Julie had returned to Ohio on a two-week leave in late May,
and stated to friends and family,
"you need to appreciate everything you have.
We have so much here just because we were born (in the USA)."
Julie Hickey is survived by her mother, her father,
stepfather and six brothers, sisters and step-siblings.
